Sightreading Test Guide

The Sightreading Test helps you measure and grow your Piano Reading Level (PRL) — a skill rating that updates after each completed run.

How to open it

Tap Sightreading Test in the main navigation (on compact mobile bars it may appear as PRL Test).

What you'll see on the landing page

  • Your current Piano Reading Level (PRL) and rank badge
  • A grid of test cards (each with criteria such as pieces per run, retries allowed, and minimum accuracy)
  • A Recommended badge on the test that best matches your level
  • A progress chart of your PRL over time
  • For free users: how many attempts you have left today

Skill rating tiers (PRL ranks)

Your rating starts around 800 for new players and moves up or down based on the pieces you play. Default ranks include:

RankUnlocks around
Absolute Beginner0
Beginner800

Late Intermediate1300

Test names and descriptions are configured by Piano Tree. The cards you see may change as new tests are added.

When free attempts are used up, tests lock until the next day (or until you upgrade).

Before you start

  • Tap ? on a test card anytime to read its recommendation / description.
  • The first time you start a test that has a description, you'll see a short "Before you start" screen — choose Continue or Cancel.

Audio setup

Before a run begins, you may be asked to choose MIDI or Microphone:

  • MIDI — connect your keyboard, then start
  • Microphone — allow mic access and lower the backing track for best detection

If you're already connected correctly, this dialog is skipped and the test starts right away.

Taking a test

  1. The app draws a set of random pieces for that test.
  2. Each piece has a short prep countdown so you can look ahead (you can Skip).
  3. Play the piece. You need the test's minimum accuracy to pass it.
  4. After each piece you'll see a pass/fail result and remaining attempts.
  5. At the end, a recap shows average accuracy, pieces passed, attempts remaining, and your PRL change.

Leaving mid-test cancels the run and discards progress — you can take the test again later.

Tips

  • Start with the Recommended test for your current level.
  • Use a quiet room and headphones if you're on microphone.
  • Harder pieces move your rating more; easy runs barely move you if you're already above that difficulty.
