Practice Tools

When you open a piece, Piano Tree gives you a full set of tools to learn at your own pace. This guide covers the main Play and Practice controls.

Play vs Practice

Practice needs an input: MIDI keyboard, microphone, or on-screen keyboard. Some special pieces (lead sheets, ear-training songs) disable Practice mode.

Tempo (BPM)

Open the tempo control from the control bar. You can:

• •Adjust BPM between 35 and 200
• •Reset to the piece's original tempo
• •Toggle the Metronome and Loop from the same popup
• •Change the beat unit on compound or odd meters

Hand mode

Cycle through Both hands, Right hand, or Left hand. The unused hand is muted/greyed on the score.

Some pieces offer special variants:

• •Four-hands — Primo / Secondo
• •Open-score / choral — Soprano, Alto, Tenor, Bass

Loop and measure range

In the tempo popup:

1. •Set a Measures range (From–To)
2. •Turn Loop on to repeat that section

Use this to lock in difficult passages before returning to the full piece.

Learn step by step

For pieces with practice steps, open Learn step by step in the song header. Each step combines a measure range, hand focus, and reduced tempo, and shows your best score for that section.

While a step is active, tempo / hand / measure controls are locked. Choose Reset to full piece when you're ready for the whole song.

Learning Modules

If a piece belongs to a learning module, open Learning Modules in the header to jump between related pieces without leaving the player.

Metronome and tempo preview

• •Toggle the metronome from the tempo popup; set its volume in the volume mixer.
• •On desktop and tablet, a floating metronome preview pill lets you hear the click before you start. It shows the Italian tempo word and BPM (for example, Andante (76 BPM)).

Count-in

In Play mode, a count-in appears before playback starts. In Settings you can choose Metronome count-in only so clicks play during the count-in and stay silent during the piece.

Advance on mistakes

Practice mode + MIDI keyboard only.

In Settings → Playback Options, turn on Advance on mistakes. Wrong notes stay highlighted in red and the cursor moves on instead of waiting.

Read ahead

In Settings → Playback Options, enable Read ahead mode to hide notes ahead of where you are playing so you must look forward. Choose how much to hide (half measure, whole measure, 1 beat, or multiple measures). Optionally keep the cursor visible during read-ahead.

Visual feedback

You can also enable Draw notes as you play in Playback Options.

Scoring

In Practice mode, a score chip shows correct notes, incorrect notes, and accuracy %. When you finish, the completion screen shows accuracy, a short message, and tempo feedback.

Scores upload when you play both hands, the full measure range, and at original tempo or faster.

Other useful controls

• •Volume mixer — piece piano, virtual instrument, metronome, and backing track volumes
• •Input type — switch MIDI / MIC / None from the control bar
• •Transposition — change or randomize the key
• •On-screen keyboard — show/hide from the control bar or Piano Visualizer settings
• •Zoom and song navigation (previous / next / random in a set)
